United salvage point with late comeback!

Match report kindly supplied by BRYAN COPELAND.

After suffering the 1st defeat of the season along with 2 red cards last week meaning a cup exit, the BU headed to Penicuik to face one of the favourites for the league along with ourselves, Tranent, and near neighbours Linlithgow.
Speaking of Linlithgow that’s where the game should have been today but due to a waterlogged pitch at Jeanfield postponing their senior Scottish cup tie that now takes precedence this week. That meant that as of last Saturday the BU had no game this week but a big thanks to the EOS and their fixture guru who organised for us to travel to Penicuik today with them also being spare having been due to play Jeanfield. At the moment this leaves a question mark for a fixture in the November week today’s game was penned in for with all other league teams having a game that day but down the line I’m sure that will be sorted out.
Todays opponents who the BU know well from the Junior days will make this no easy game with the home side off to a good start this season and up the league among the top teams. After last weeks disappointment however a result here would do wonders to restore the great start to the season up until then. Given the previous results at present last week goes down as a blip but the BU won’t be looking for anymore today as Max and the boys along with the support will be looking for a win to keep the pressure on at the top end of the table.
The last time the BU visited Penicuik Park was earlier this year when we played Musselburgh in the League Cup Final and returned home with the trophy.
The return fixture of this game is scheduled for Ground hop weekend and will take place as the last match of the event on Sunday 22nd of March 2020 with a 12:15 kick off.

Into todays game then and it was the visitors that started the best keeping possession and pressing a high line up the pitch. The home keeper however was kept quiet as no shots went towards his goal. Morgan was brutally brought down and a foul awarded before the home side them managed to get up towards the box and forced a corner. The corner came to nothing as did one for the BU at the other end as it was easily headed away. A blood injury then had the BU playing with 10 men while Syme got cleaned up and changed his shirt but there was no action to report on before he returned and the match almost reached the 30 minute mark. 31 minutes in and a chance of a shot on goal came for the BU as the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Morgan struck it and as the shouts of handball went up they were waved away by the referee with the defensive wall doing its job and blocking. A further shot was then deflected away for a throw in on the far side. The home side then broke forward and from no where we had the opening goal of the match, a ball crossed in from the right went behind the defence and also past Murphy who was scrambling over his goal, hit off the post and as it was booted clear it was judged to be too late and that the ball had crossed the line (impossible to tell from my position) Penicuik 1 - 0 BU, 34 minutes played. Hewitt then added his name to the BU bookings for today along with Syme and Comrie. Ian Nimmo shortly followed into the book believed to be for comments made to the referee making it 5 bookings out of 6 games for the mid fielder. Things then got worse for the visitors as the found themselves 2 - 0 behind. A simple ball played into the box was missed by Hewitt and as none of the other defenders dealt with it the ball easily landed in the back of the net in what can only be described as a terrible goal to lose. Penicuik 2 - 0 BU - 5 mins to half time. The ironic thing being that for the 1st half hour - 35 mins the visitors were the better team. The home side had a corner right on half time well headed away at the front post and as the visitors tried to break down the wing quickly a foul was awarded as Gemmell was stopped in his tracks. The ball from the free kick was played into the box and it found its way to Morgan a quick ball was then played back to Campbell who put it into the back of the net via a Penicuik defenders head. A roar went up from the large visiting support but it was short lived as the goal was chopped off for off side. The BU argues it couldn’t be off side as it came off a home player last but the lineman and referee were having none of it.
That was to be the last action of the half as it ended Penicuik 2 - 0 BU.

Into the 2nd half and BU manager Max Christie made a change as Terry Hewitt was replaced by Ryan Stevenson. The visitors then got the break they needed and probably on balance deserved as Morgan headed the ball towards goal, the girl defence tried to clear but it was all in vein as the ball had crossed the line and it was now Penicuik 2 - 1 BU. The visitors continued to press a high line up the pitch in search of an equaliser but the home keeper was quiet despite all the possession. A chance for an equaliser was there for the taking as a great ball across the box left a free header but it was put over the bar from close range. As the home side broke forward they got into the box and Syme left a foot out causing foul that left the referee pointing to the spot for a penalty. It was tucked away low into the net leaving BU keeper Murphy no chance. Penicuik 3 - 1 BU with 16 minutes remaining. 7 minutes remaining and another life line came the visitors way as Morgan squared the ball and it was struck towards goal by Comrie, it looked to be an easy save for the home keeper but a deflection sent the ball the other way and into the net to make it 3-2 with the goal having to be noted as an OG. Gemmell went into referees note book before Morgan done well with a burst of pace to get the ball and play it across the box unfortunately the chance went begging as the ball went out of play at the far post. As the visitors tried for an equaliser the home side caught them on the break and a shot flashed past the post. As the match went into added time the home side could and should have had the game put to bed as they missed an absolute sitter in front of goal. The visiting BU punished them fully as they broke quickly and as the ball came over the box the home keeper should have dealt with it but was left stranded as a Keast cross found the net. Penicuik 3 - 3 BU. Thinking that was to be the last action and the points would be shared the referee centred the ball and as we all expected the final whistle the he side played on in what was now a frantic end to the match, the ball came into the box and Murphy made a superb save blocking the ball but only as far as the edge of the box and as another shot fired towards goal Gemmell got his body in front of it to make a block. The visitors then came forward and the game was stopped for a foul on the half way line. Stevenson made his way into the book while play was stopped. The match restarted with the girl side playing the ball back to Murphy in the BU goal and that was to be the last action as the match ended Penicuik 3 - 3 BU.
