Bo’ness United welcome Scottish Cup adventurers Broxburn Athletic who have reached round four of the National competition rewarded with a money-spinning visit to Premier League St Mirren.

Broxburn cannot help but be excited with their great run but know they need to focus on domestic matters to get their Premier Division campaign back on track. Over the last month or so they have lost to Sauchie Juniors, Linlithgow Rose and Penicuik Athletic They also lost to Tranent Juniors in the South of Scotland Cup but last week turned things around winning by the odd goal in five at Dundonald Bluebell.

The Scottish Cup venture started with a home win against Tynecastle followed by an exciting victory versus Lowland League side East Stirlingshire. They drew at League 2 Cowdenbeath but scored three goals without response to win the replay at Albyn Park. Next up was the long journey to Aberdeenshire where a single goal was enough to see off Inverurie Loco. Now they take over one thousand supporters to Paisley where they have nothing to lose and everything to hope for.

Bo’ness shared the points at Broxburn in the first game of the season. A first half goalkeeping error saw an Andy Gillan cross drop behind the BU goal line but Ryan Stevenson fired in an equaliser before the end. Broxburn’s last visit to Newtown Park just over two years ago was also a draw. A Gillan own goal put Bo’ness ahead but former BU Zander Miller pulled one back before the break. Fraser Keast regained the lead for Bo’ness in the second half before another former Blue, Kieran Anderson equalised at the death. In the two games at Bo’ness earlier that year Broxburn triumphed in the league and the Fife and Lothians Cup. You have to go back almost four years for a Bo’ness home win, a league game with a solitary strike from Fraser Eddington.

There are two new players in the Bo’ness squad, Kris Faulds and Graeme MacGregor both signing from Sauchie Juniors, with Iain Syme moving in the opposite direction. In the Broxburn team there are a number of familiar faces. Apart from the free scoring Miller, Connor Wallace, Craig Scott are regulars as is Ian Nimmo’s brother Ross. Second in charge is former Bo’ness hero Steven Hislop who is enjoying his time in the guiding role.

The BUs know they face a very difficult game but also know they are capable of getting a result. They proved that with a win at Hill of Beath Hawthorn and their last outing at home to second place Camelon Juniors. A sensational Ryan Stevenson goal gave Bo’ness a half time lead but just after the break a defensive lapse allowed Alan Docherty to bring Camelon level. Chris Donnelly snatched the winner for the BUs who deserved their success on the day.

Bo’ness need to be at their best for this game but can depend on the rousing backing provided by the BU Faithful. A successful Broxburn should bring their own sizeable following, meaning a great atmosphere for this pre-Christmas fixture.
Let’s make some noise for the BUs
