Bo’ness United were frustrated to leave Ainslie Park empty handed in a game where their overall play deserved more as they enjoyed the majority of possession, creating most of the chances. Bo’ness also appeared to be on the wrong end of many on field decisions, the BU Faithful believing a foul leading up to the Hearts second goal went undetected and a late penalty claim was also denied. In saying that, Bo’ness could have made more of their opportunities in front of goal although Hearts will be grateful to their young goalkeeper Jack Lyon who had some magnificent saves throughout the game.

Jack Lyon’s first save was only three minutes in followed by a Kieran Mitchell shot that was just wide of the target. Bo’ness were looking good at this point but a lightning Hearts break up the park saw Jaedon Donkor get on the end of a low ball across the box firing in from close in. Bo’ness pushed for an equaliser and only a great double save by the Hearts keeper stopped Kieran Mitchell and Kyle Johnston grabbing a counter. Lewis Hodgkiss then had a great shot blocked in the box and typically only minutes later Bo’ness were two behind, a strong run from Stanley Wilson seeing him through on goal to slot past Allan Fleming in the Bo’ness goal. Before the break Lucas Fyfe shot just wide for Bo’ness who had it all to do in the second half.

Bo’ness set about the task and were again dominating the possession though unable to make the breakthrough. It wasn’t all one way as Jayden Mathie was strong in the box, holding off the challenge before testing the BU keeper. However, Bo’ness were resolute and with just over half an hour remaining finally got the goal they were looking for. The Hearts keeper was only able to parry a Kieran Mitchell shot and Lucas Fyfe pounced to net the rebound. Bo’ness worked to get an equaliser though always needing to be aware of the young Hearts breaking forward. Unfortunately for the travelling band of BU fans their favourites were unable to get the equaliser and to rub salt in the Bo’ness wound, just before the end the referee red carded Lewis Hodgkiss after choosing to show the youngster a second yellow in as many minutes. A disappointing end to a disappointing evening and the BUs now look forward to the long trip to Gretna hoping for a return to winning ways.
