It was another match to be dominated by the weather but Bo’ness United overcame the elements plus Gretna 2008’s game management to earn a last gasp win.
Shooting into the strong west wind Bo’ness actually created the first chance, Kieran Michell running free only for Gretna keeper Jay Kennedy to block the shot. Unfortunately for the BUs they conceded soon after with a poor clearance landing nicely for Iain Anderson and although Ben Fry got a hand on the shot it was too fierce to keep out. As expected, Gretna were pushing forward but it was not all one way traffic, Kieran Mitchell seeing another effort saved by Jay Kennedy. However, Gretna struck again a great curling shot by Sean McKenzie giving Ben Fry no chance as the ball sailed into the top corner of the net. Bo’ness responded with a great Roan Fitzpatrick shot well saved by Jay Kennedy although before the break Gretna came close to extending their lead with a couple of efforts.
With the strong wind now behind them Bo’ness set about getting back at Gretna and right away Kieran Michell brought out another save from Jay Kennedy before the BUs made the breakthrough Aldin El-Zubaidi heading in from a Roan Fitzpatrick corner. Five minutes later it was all square, Kieran Michell again breaking free, this time getting the better of the Gretna keeper slotting the ball home. Bo’ness were looking to complete the comeback but with fifteen minutes remaining a calamitous mix up at the back allowed Iain Anderson to score to regain the lead for Gretna.
This setback might have been enough to finish other teams but Bo’ness merely brushed themselves down and once again set about getting back. Ten minutes to go Tom Grant curled over a corner the ball finding the far corner of the net to equal things up though at the other end Gretna had the ball in the net only to be flagged for offside. A let off for Bo’ness as the clock ticked down. Into time added on Bo’ness were buzzing and a full six minutes over the ninety Adam Masson gathered in the box before cooly firing in a low shot that found the target and set off great celebrations both on and off the park as the BUs finally completed the revival.
