United win from behind

Bo'ness United won back to back Lowland League matches after seeing off Broomhill at the Indodrill stadium. It was far from straight forward against a decent Broomhill side, however the management team will be delighted at keeping the momentum going after seeing off Rangers B in their previous outing.

Max Christie made two changes from the team that started at the weekend with Matty Flynn and Kyle Johnston replacing Kyle Wilson and Danny Galbraith.

The opening stages were even with chances at both ends. Finlay Gray was impressive throughout and he first showed what he was all about nipping onto a short back header, Andy Murphy was out quickly to block; at the other end there was a goalmouth scramble with the ball eventually blasted over by Kyle Johnston.

Scally, Gray and Lamont missed good opportunities for the home side before Broomhill grabbed a deserved opener in the 37th minute, Gray making space for a strike some 20 yards out which flew past Murphy and into the top corner.

Bo'ness rejigged their personnel in an effort to get Nick Locke playing further forward and in the closing stages of the half they pushed for a leveller. Kieran Anderson tested Smith in the Broomhill goal with a decent strike before the BU's did equalise in first half stoppage time. Anderson had another effort at goal which Smith could only fumble at the feet of Flynn, the experienced forward wasn't going to pass up the opportunity and poked the ball home.

So level at the break after a tough opening period, Max Christie's team talk no doubt a tad easier after the late goal.

The second half was a far more open affair with chances aplenty for both teams. In the 54th minute there was a huge let off for United when a long throw in sent Gray scampering through on goal, he squared to the unmarked Lamont who again fluffed his lines and hammered the ball over the bar.

Gregor Nicol stung the palms of 'keeper Smith with a fierce strike and midway through the half Bo'ness struck the post after a deep freekick evaded the home defence, Johnston unable to convert the rebound.

There were little over ten minutes left to be played when Gray had the chance to double his and Broomhills tally when he was played straight through on goal, Murphy was alert to rush out and make a superb stop with his feet. Minutes later the visitors really punished this miss when they went ahead for the first time in the game, Locke drove forward determinedly and got a powerful shot off, the ball was saved but knocked over the line by a Broomhill defender for an unfortunate own goal.

The last real chance of the game fell to Bo'ness, Flynn firing wide under heavy pressure from his marker and the rest of the match was seen out fairly comfortably.

One loss in eight league games now for the Newtown Park side, however a tough task awaits this weekend against a Stirling University side who impressively beat United last season at Forthbank and who drew this midweek at East Stirlingshire.
