Bo’ness Team :

Back to league duty for the 1st time in almost a month for the BU with cup ties being the order of the day recently. A trip to Gretna followed by a trip to Wick were followed by 2 replays at home filleting abandonment last week after Zander Miller suffered a horrific injury. Once again we wish Zander well and a speedy recovery.
Another 1st tonight for Bo’ness is that we are taking part in the well known and well attended Groundhop weekend and it’s about time we had our shot given that we were supposed to be involved twice before but the pandemic meant it never happened last time.
All at the club look forward to welcoming the extra spectators meaning that we should be in for a large crowd given the support the BU usually gets for matches anyway, a look at the crowd on Tuesday night which was an outstanding turn out reminds us well of the support we have.
Into tonight’s game and Civil Service won’t be arriving to make up the numbers they’ll be looking to put on a good show and take something from the match. They’re a good side with plenty experience at lowland league level however the home side can go into the match with confidence given the recent cup results. The down side of course for Bo’ness is due to the aforementioned injury we are without key man and top goal scorer Zander Miller but there is players there who have shown they can finish and when chances arrive they must be taken if we’re to get a league win at home which is yet to happen this season.

The home side got the match underway attacking the goal towards Kinneil School and goal mouth action wise it was a very quiet opening 10 minutes with both sides enjoying some possession. A through ball almost found Locke but it was cut out with a good interception while at the other end a great block stopped a shot heading towards Murphy from just inside the box. After a bit of calm the wind really picked up and the rain came lashing down once again with the home side having to face it head on. Hemmed done well down the right and when he got to the corner he won the ball well and slid it across the box only for the ball to go narrowly wide of the post. Another good ball in was close to being met at the back post however good goalkeeping stopped it. Murphy came racking off his line to cut out a cross field ball and was helped out with booting the ball clear from us defence and moments later as the home side broke forward a brilliant ball from the right found Flynn just inside the box and he shot low into the bottom corner leaving the visiting keeper no chance. A brilliant finish to make it BU 1 - 0 civil service on 33 minutes. The home side were going well against the strong wind and Wilson was almost through but as he was blocked he found a way to Locke who came very close with the ball going just past the far post. 2 minutes to half time and the home side doubled their lead a cross from the left was controlled by Wilson but his shot was blocked only for the ball to roll to Jacobs not far inside the 18 yard line and he had no hesitation firing the ball high into the roof of the net. BU 2 - 0 Civil service. From the kick off the visitors were back in the game as they worked the ball straight towards goal and when the home side should have been set to deal with the situation they weren’t leaving the simplest of finishes to make it BU 2 - 1 Civil Service. A corner to civil service finished the half as it was cleared out the box the referee blew for half time.
Bo’ness United 2 - 0 Civil Service Strollers.

Into the 2nd half and a long ball forward towards Flynn saw him do well in trying to get on the end of it and appeals went up when it looked as if he was pulled back inside the box however the referee waved play on. Jacobs won the ball well in midfield but his forward pass to the left had just too much on it for Stevenson to pick up and at the other end Murphy was alert making a good save from a shot just outside the box. Hunter was busy at the back and the old head showed plenty experience in shepherding the ball to safety then brilliant experience told him exactly where to be to win the ball back with a really good tackle. Hunter was again involved with yet another well timed tackle and as he sent the ball forward it almost fell into the path of Jacobs. A change for the BU saw Wilson replaced by Anderson on 64 minutes. A few minutes later and it was 3-1 Nicky Locke producing a sublime strike a contender for goal of the season possibly (along with Grant at Vale of leithen) it was a strike that had to be seen to be believed this one. BU 3 - 1 Civil service. Murphy got off his line quickly and cleared long up field from just outside his box and as the ball dropped to Stevenson he had a go from distance and watched the ball go over the bar. All encouragement for the home side however as the support continued to urge them forward. A ball in from the left was headed back across the area and once again Hunter was involved this time with an overhead kick on target forcing the Civil Service keeper into a save. Anderson got very ambitious with a shot from way way out sending the ball high and wide with now just 12 minutes remaining. The visiting keeper has his gloves stung again as a shorty throw was played to Anderson and although his initial ball across the 18 yard line was intercepted it was soon with Jacobs who sent a shot towards goal from and acute angle. Just a few minutes to go and Hunter calmly cleared the ball towards midfield from his own 18 yard line. A calm final couple of minutes saw the game out for Bo’ness giving them a well deserved victory and 3 points. Very good display all round tonight.

Full time Bo’ness United 3 - 1 Civil Service Strollers.
