United Tame The Thistle

Report kindly supplied by BRYAN COPELAND

The final league game of the season is upon us today with a trip to Dalkeith and it brings with it great hope of a winning finish to the campaign. Having not played Dalkeith all season to now playing them back to back and a win for the BU on Tuesday night stretched Gaffer Max Christie’s unbeaten start to 13 games I’m sure himself and all the lads will be looking to make it 14 today.
Although having said this is the last league game it’s not the final game of the season for the BU with 2 cups still left to play for so a positive result today will keep the spirits up and the confidence high ahead of the next game which sees us travel to Tranent this coming Tuesday. Before that however there is today’s game which with 2nd in the league guaranteed for the visitors and the home side already resigned to their fate of not finishing in the Top 5 of the Conference which could suggest a meaningless game but if u look into it’s far from that. The home side will be looking to avenge the defeat in midweek to the BU and the visitors have the unbeaten start of Max Christie to protect plus keep momentum going ahead of the upcoming cup ties and of course for both sides pride is at stake as it is with any club in any game.
Into today’s game and it was taken in by the usual large following of away supporters who turn up week in week out no matter what. After leaving Bo’ness with rain the sun was out as the game got underway and McKenzie done well for the visitors on the right beating his man and getting a cross in that was cleared and deflected for a goal kick. 9 minutes in and Mckenzie was in on the action again this time the ball fell to him inside the box and his header was palmed away by the home keeper the rebound looked like a goal as if fell but the ball was cleared before it could be sent towards goal. Will Snowdon picked up a yellow card for what looked like something he said to the match officials. Soon the visitors were on the attack again and the home keeper done well to clear. On 23 minutes the break through came, a ball into the box was headed beautifully into the top corner by the home defender in what was a great finish unfortunately for him at the wrong end. Dalkeith 0 - 1 BU. Just 3 minutes later amid controversial circumstances the lead was doubled for the visitors. A ball into the box was met and shot towards goal and the appeals for handball went up. The referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot which was the correct decision. The wrong decision came when he then decided to send the home player off and although both referee and lines man saw it they had no conversation about the incident. Fans and players from both sides agreed yes it was a penalty but never a red card. However up stepped Stevenson to take the penalty and he made no mistake slotting the ball past the keeper into the net. Dalkeith 0 - 2 BU. A few minutes later and a blow for the visitors as Prentice went off injured replaced by Wright. 8 minutes to half time and Morgan delivered a good corner for the BU, the home defence cleared well and managed to get on the front foot giving them a chance to get the ball into the box. Morgan had won it back before it made it in however after the clearance the ball was headed back into the BU box and defended for corner. The corner was cleared and soon forward came the visitors again and the home keeper was called into action to clear the ball. With half time now upon us the visitors almost extended their lead when Morgan swung in a good corner only for the home defender to head against his own cross bar.
Half time Dalkeith 0 - 2 BU.
Into the 2nd half and it was a fairly quiet start with none of the 2 keepers having anything to do in the opening 20 minutes. The home side had chance to get back in the game with a good cross from the right that went over the head of Murphy in the BU goal, Snowdon was there covering however and headed the ball off the line. 25 minutes into the half and a 3rd goal for the BU, McKenzie done well and played a great cross in for Keast to find the net. Dalkeith 0 - 3 BU. A ball into the visitors box had Murphy rushing off his line and as he jumped he unconvincingly missed the ball thankfully there was no danger as the referee blew and gave offside. 10 minutes to go and the 2nd change came from BU manager Max Christie as McKenzie was replaced by Comrie. Chances at both end followed as the home side had a corner well cleared by the visiting defence followed by a good move up the right wing resulting in a short cross followed by a quick shot on goal that went wide of the home keepers post. A cross into the BU box could have been a good opportunity for the visitors but the ball ran wide before it even reaches the near post. With a minute to go the home side tried to break forward but Morgan done well to get to the ball and clear for a throw in. Into added time and another ball across the visitors box had Murphy come off his line and misjudge the ball thankfully it ran past the far post. The visitors countered quickly and the ball came to Comrie 25 yards out, he blasted the ball into the net for 4-0 BU. The home side centred the ball and straight after it was kicked the referee blew for full time.
