BU's beat the champs

Match report kindly submitted by BRYAN COPELAND.

With 2 cup games last week for the BU the 1st won in extra time and the 2nd going the full way to penalties for another win BU gaffer Max Christie’s unbeaten start continues into today’s game making it a match of the undefeated. The only difference being that today’s opponents unbeaten run is season long. It will be a touch test for Max Christie and his BU side as any match against Bonnyrigg always is and with the home side already crowned champions and looking forward to the round robin playoffs with a place in the lowland league at stake the visiting BU are also assured to be moving up to the top EOS League next season having guaranteed a top 5 place in Conference B.
With the weather making it a cracking day for football I’m sure we’re in for a cracking match as well.

Into today’s game then and it was

Into the match then and it was taken in by a good crowd from both sides. Early on both teams had possession and half chances that came to nothing but after 10 minutes there was no real chances. The first talking point came as the home No.3 picked up a yellow card for a shocking tackle with studs showing on Jacobs. Some after a cross into the home sides box came to nothing as the keeper clutched the ball well. A real chance for the visitors came after 14 minutes with a free kick on the edge of the box. Stevenson struck it but it was straight into the home sides wall. With the ball being knocked about bu both side but mainly the away side the breakthrough came with a very well taken goal on 23 minutes. Great passing over the midfield led to a brilliant pass forwards and after an initial block the ball fell to Morgan who hit it sweetly into the corner of the net. Bonnyrigg 0 - 1 BU. The home side tried to get into the game from the kick off but Murphy in the BU goal done well to clear even though he was fouled but the referee waved the claims away. 31 minutes in and another goal came again for the visitors a good cross into the box found Hunter at the back post who headed into the net off the post. Bonnyrigg 0 - 2 BU. The home side tired to get back into the game but it was still the visitors looking the better of the 2 sides winning the defensive headers and trying to keep possession of the the ball in the midfield. The home sore got a couple of chances from free kicks the 1st was hit from well outside the box and went high over the bar. Then another that was crossed in from the left that Murphy done well to clear for a corner. A good ball forward from the BU led to s chance to cross the ball in from wide left but it was blocked by the home defence. As the minutes ticked by to half time the visitors had another chance to cross but it came to nothing as the home side cleared well and got forward. The cross was good but well cleared by Campbell and no danger came from it. The last action of the half was a corner to the BU headed clear by the home defence.
Bonnyrigg 0 - 2 BU - Half time.

Into the 2nd half and it was the visitors that started the better of the 2 sides Jacobs done well playing the ball forward to Stevenson who linked up with Donnelly only for the home keeper to be alert and clear any danger. Moments later and a golden opportunity to extend the lead for the visitors as the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty. Keast was cutting in from the wing and got brought down. Captain Dougie stepped up only for his shot to be saved by the home keeper and the score remained at 0-2. 16 minutes in and the job got easier for the visitors as a foul just last half way led to a 2nd yellow reducing the home side to 10 men. The 1st change from BU Gaffer Christie came as Donnelly was replaced by Prentice. 22 minutes into the half and a brilliant chance to extend the lead came as Keast done superbly well playing the ball theiugh and had it sound the net the goal would have stood however Stevenson got on the end of it and kicked the ball into the net only for the linesman on the far side to raise his flag for offside. Jacobs done well down the left hand side to beat a couple of men and play the ball over to Prentice the home side however cleared the danger. With 10 minutes remaining a goal out of no where came to put the home side back into the game a simple cross was headed well into the far corner of the net and with the home side grabbing the ball to get the game started again quickly clearly they had belief out of no where to get something from the game. Into the final 5 minutes and BU Gaffer Max Christie made a 2nd change as Wright replaced Keast. Just a couple of minutes to go and the game was put beyond doubt as the best time sealed the win, a great ball forward found Wright who made no mistake placing the ball into the net Bonnyrigg 1 - 3 BU. Right on time up and end visitors could and possibly should have been playing 9 men as the home No 14 lifted his hands but the referee let him off with a talking to. With no more action the referee blew for full time Bonnyrigg 1 - 3 BU.
