Match Preview 2018 2019

Newtongrange Star, League Cup Round 1, New Victoria Park, Tuesday 09 April 2019

Bo’ness United’s reward for their extra time League Cup win against Tynecastle is a visit to Newtongrange Star for round 1 proper of the tournament. In a tough match at Carmuirs Park, Bo’ness’s home ground for the remainder of this season, Tynecastle opened the scoring through Jordan Smith early in the second half . Allan MacKenzie equalised for the BUs before Tynecastle were reduced to ten men, Matthew Combe sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Bo’ness were unable to take advantage in normal time but Devon Jacobs did put them ahead in the first half of extra time and Nicky Prentice made sure with last kick of the ball.

Newtongrange progressed to the first round after winning their section at the beginning of the season. They won at Craigroyston and home to Dundonald then drew against Broxburn. The Star did not play on Saturday and their scheduled game against Craigroyston was postponed on Wednesday. Their last game was a week past Sunday, a win at Peebles Rovers.

Bo’ness visited New Victoria Park at the tail end of last season where a threadbare squad lost out despite a credible performance. Fraser Keast put Bo’ness ahead but two goals from Kyle Scott gave the home side a half time lead. Ryan Millar got Bo’ness back but a controversial penalty decision allowed Newtongrange to regain the lead before Kyle Scott completed his hat trick to seal the points for Newtongrange.

Newtongrange will be fresh going into the game on Tuesday night while the extra time on Saturday represents a test to the fitness of the Bo’ness squad. However the BU players will dig in and a noisy visiting support can do no harm to their efforts to get the win.

A game under lights provides its own atmosphere and a visit to Tranent awaits the winner of this tie. Hopefully that can be an additional trip for the BU Faithful to forward to.
