EOS FA League Cup
Bo’ness United v Tynecastle FC
Sat 06/04/19 Carmuirs Park, Camelon KO 14:30

BU Team :
Gk : Marshall Def : Syme Hunter Snowden Jacobs Mid/Att : Stevenson Gemmil Comrie Morgan Donnelly Keast.

With the BU still unbeaten in both league and cups under new manager Max Christie as his impressive start continues another chance for cup progression today against a team the BU will now know well having already played each other several times this season in league and cup matches. This is also the 1st home match away from home for the BU with work already started at Newtown Park unfortunately the remaining home games will have to be played outwith Bo’ness with the choice for various reasons finally being that games will be played at Carmuirs Park the home of Camelon Juniors. Today’s cup tie will be played to a finish with a draw after 90 minutes meaning extra time and penalties which both teams will be looking to avoid as Newtongrange Star already await the winners in the next round with that match scheduled for this coming Tuesday with Star the home team.

Into today’s game then and in the drizzly rain the game got underway in front of a decent BU support given that the game was played away from home as a home game. The visitors (Tynecastle) had the best of the opening 10 minutes with Marshall in the BU goal called into action after a decent shot and the BU defence having to work well together to clear after a quick burst into the box. The BU soon started to come into the game with a quick move forward and a good ball into the box that sparked the Tynecastle defence into action. This was followed by the visiting keeper making a routine save and as the ball was played out quickly a very dangerous counter attack that was let down by the final pass allowing Jacobs to intercept for the BU before passing the ball back to Marshall to kick it long to field. 21 minutes in and the home side were on the attack again but the end shot was easily blocked and cleared. Fast forward just 2 minutes and a corner to the visitors was swung into the BU box, Hunter rose well just yards from the line to make a good headed clearance and set the BU going forward again. A corner resulted and Morgan swung it in but it was an easy clearance for the visiting keeper. Forward came the home side again however and a decent shot was just wide of the left hand post resulting in a goal kick. The next part of the 1st half had very little to report with both teams enjoying midfield possession and nothing coming towards goal other that a simply ball from a cross picked out the air from the visiting keeper. 34 minutes gone and a throw in for the visitors beat Jacobs out wide and with Snowden rushing over to cover it left space wide open in the middle of the box, over came the ball and in game the shot but Marshall was equal to it and saved comfortably. With 6 minutes of the half remaining the home side got a corner that again was easily defended. A good cross from Keast saw the visiting keeper get down well to smother the ball before anyone got on the end of it and with half ti fast approaching it was looking rather like the same old story between these 2 sides as every game played so far against each other has failed to produce a 1st half goal form either side. A long ball forward by the visitors was well cleared by Hunter with a strong header. A minute until half time and a free kick was awarded to the visitors out on the wind, Marshall clutched the ball confidently and easily as it came towards his goal though. With no more action to be had the 1st half ended
BU 0 - 0 Tynecastle.

Into the 2nd half and it began much the same as the period of the 1st half with both teams having possession but not doing a lot with it. BU manager Max Christie also made a change which saw McKenzie coming back from injury replace Fraser Keast. On 58 minutes the deadlock in the tie was broken as the visitors took the lead BU 0 - 1 Tynecastle. A 2nd sun for the BU then saw Prentice replace Comrie. The home side tried to get back in the game with a good corner swung in by Morgan that had to be cleared by the visitors and a great through ball that found Hunter who’s shot was well blocked as if it headed towards goal. The equaliser came for the home side 25 minutes into the half as Donnelly done really well and set up McKenzie who made no mistake firing the ball home to make it 1-1. The game started to open up with the visitors enjoying most of the possession while the home side wanted to kick on. With very little action on goal to speak of until McKenzie had a quick snap shot that was turned away for a corner. Morgan swung it in and the ball was cleared leading to a counter attack that was well broken up by the home defence. With 12 minutes to go far up the field Gemmil for the BU hit the deck after a challenge and it saw the referee produce a red card to the visitors meaning the home side now had 10 men to beat for the remainder of the game. More controversy came with 9 minutes to go as Gemmil made a great challenge inside the box but the visitors claimed a penalty the referee however waved away the claims and play continued. Well inside the final 10 minutes and the home side were looking for the winner and a good ball into the box was met by Mckenzie who couldn’t quite get the ball out from his feel for a shot but laid it off well only for it to be defended for a corner. Lothian swung it in and it took a good clearance to prevent any shot coming towards the costing keeper. With 4 minutes remaining a brilliant move forward from one half to another saw the ball eventually land at Prentice who hit a sweet shot destined towards goal only for a visiting defender to make a fantastic block and send the ball out of play. 90 minutes on the clock and the tie looked to be heading for extra time m, only the home side could clinch it now as we had a corner. Morgan swung it in and it was well won inside the area and swung back across the goal up went McKenzie and his header was strong and on target looking to be heading into the net only for the costing keeper to raise a hand and tip the ball over the bar for another corner. Morgan again swung it in and as the ball was cleared it was quickly picked up again by the home side who got another ball into the box this time it went out for a goal kick. 94 minutes played and everyone now thinking extra rime one final ball forward came for the BU but the visiting defence cleared before the ball made it into the box. Finally 6 minutes over time the referee ended the match at 1-1 and it was now on to extra time.

Into the 1st period of extra time and Hunter was replace by McDonald in a reshuffle by BU Gaffer Max Christie. The home side looking the most likely against the 10 men the next goal followed as Jacobs hit a shot and although it looked to be going wide it took a deflection that sent it on target and into the back of the net. With the home side looking in control the 1st half of extra time ended BU 2 - 1 Tynecastle.
The 2nd period of extra time was started after a quick turn around and the 1st action of it was a free kick for the BU on the far side just outside the box. Morgan swung a great ball in and Donnelly at the back post had a header on target that was well saved by the keeper then cleared by the visiting defence. The visitors then got forward and won a free kick on the edge of the box but the ball in was easily cleared. Forward again came the home side and a great through ball had Donnelly on the end of it, he took a touch to take it away from the keeper and as it looked like a shooting opportunity he laid the ball off and it was cleared by the visitors. A corner ensued that was swung in by Morgan and as the ball was cleared shouts for a foul saw Morgan booked by the referee. The visitors then broke forward and had a chance to equalise but the shot on goal was wide of the target. As it looked like the home side were making hard for themselves a bit the last kick of the ball was the goal that send the BU to the next round a good ball found Prentice who finished low into the net and put the tie behind doubt at BU 3 - 1 Tynecastle. The visitors centred the ball and the referee blew for full time.
A trip to Newtongrange on Tuesday night now awaits the BU.
