Bo’ness United are into the final of the Alex Jack Cup after this narrow victory at Haddington Athletic. The BUs got off to great start when Nicky Prentice headed home from a Brian Morgan corner and were in control of the game early on. Haddington were getting forward but the BU defence looked solid.
The whole character of the game changed after half an hour when Josh MacDonald received a straight red card for an alleged spitting incident. In saying that, Bo’ness had the chance to go two up from another corner but this time the Haddington keeper, Sinclair Inglis saved from Chris Donnelly.
Haddington started to take advantage of their superior numbers and BU keeper Andy Murphy made two great saves in quick succession from Andy McNeil and Ross King. Just before the break Bo’ness thought they had extended their lead when Brian Morgan found the back of the net with a low free kick shot but an offside flag cut short the celebrations.
Into the second half and Allan MacKenzie had a good run and shot that Inglis saved and a great volley from Andy Shirra went just over. However, it was Haddington who scored the equaliser in 53 minutes after a BU move broke down. The ball was played forward and Andy McNeill curled a looping shot over Andy Murphy from thirty yards out.
The goal looked to have given Haddington confidence as they pushed forward. Declan Quinn headed over and Will Snowdon did well to divert a Grant Rose shot for a corner. With fifteen minutes remaining Murphy made another great save, this time from Andy Jones and five minutes later the numbers were evened up when Darren Leslie, already on a yellow card, lunged into a challenge to be booked and then shown the red card.
The home side did not look so confident now and Marty Wright, who had come on earlier to make appearance number 100 for the BUs, brought out a good save from Inglis. Ross Campbell headed over from the resulting corner.
New signing Craig Comrie had also been introduced and the final change was Kieran Sweeney brought on with five minutes left on the clock. Bo’ness looked the likelier side now and three minutes after coming on Sweeney got onto the end of a Chris Donnelly low cross to fire in the winner from close in.
Bo’ness will now meet Camelon Juniors in the final, set for Sunday 25 November at a venue yet to be determined.
