BU'S run out comfortable winners

Match Report by Brian Copeland

The 1st away trip for the BU saw us visit Oakley in the last of the 3 EOS Qualifying League Cup games and a win would see the BU guaranteed at least 2nd place with Jeanfield Swifts expected to win against Leith Athletic however a slip up from Jeanfield could still see us take the top spot. On the other hand a slip up from the BU could mean the end of the road in the competition with Oakley still also looking to qualify.
Into the game and a good away support was there to cheer on the BU as the action got underway. The 1st of the chances came the way of the visitors when Keast had a good shot on the Home sides goal. A couple of corners in quick succession followed for the visitors as they kept the home side penned into their own half. A good ball into the home sides box from Morgan found Hunter rising up and his header skimmed off the post as the fans behind the goal thought it was goal bound as it passed the home keeper. The game fell into a bit of a lull with not a lot of action from either side the only chance to note being just before the half hour when Marc Kelly had a header saved by the Oakley keeper. The next effort on goal again came from the visitors firstly Wright done well cutting inside and having a shot blocked, Gemmil picked up the loose ball and was fouled giving a free kick. Morgan crossed the ball into the box and Wright got his head to it, unfortunately it was over the bar causing no problems for the home keeper. The goal mouth action was all coming for the BU with crosses coming in unfortunately however no goals as yet to show for it as the game entered the final 5 mins of the first half. Good play down the left between Wright and Gemmil gained the BU another corner but this time it was poor and didn’t beat the first man in defence for the home side. The final 2 chances of the half again fell to the visiting BU Keast had a header straight at the keeper and Morgan hit a free kick high and wide.
Half time Oakley 0 - 0 BU
Into the 2nd half and it was an early lift for the visiting BU team and support as Campbell found the net to make it Oakley 0 - 1 BU. After the goal the game continued much in the same vein with very little goal mouth action but the visiting BU still had most of the possession. With 25 minutes remaining the game looked to be put beyond doubt as Marty Wright finished well to make it Oakley 0 - 2 BU. A free kick from the home side caused no trouble what so ever with 23 minutes remaining as Murphy in the BU goal stepped off his line and caught the shot. With 17 minutes remaining BU manager Kerrigan made a change as Wright went off for Donnelly. A free kick for the visitors was swung into the box and headed clear only for it to be swung back in from the other side, this time the home keeper was alert and off his line to catch well and take any threat on goal away. With 10 mins to play the 2nd change for the BU saw Keast replaced by Rintoul. Up until 3 minutes to play there was very little action again to report other than 1 shot on the home sides goal from the edge of the box that went wide. Snowden picked up a yellow card for a foul with 2 minutes remaining. Into injury time and 2 minutes in Marc Kelly returning today completed a good day for the visiting BU tucking the ball home to make it Oakley 0 - 3 BU. The ball was centred as the referee blew for full time
