Bo’ness United welcome Lochee United to Newtown Park as the sides renew their acquaintances for the first time in over eight years. The last meeting was in the East Region Super League, Bo’ness moving to the East of Scotland League the following season. Bo’ness achieved the double over the Dundee team that season but over the years no one dominated the fixture, both clubs enjoying victories home and away. In the final meeting at Newtown Bo’ness scored three without reply, Will Snowdon scoring from a first half penalty and second half goals from Marty Wright and Marc Kelly (Report).

Lochee have made a good start to the season, four victories, a draw and only two defeats seeing them in 6th position on the table. On Saturday they lost against Brechin and are now only two places and three points ahead of the BUs. At the weekend Bo’ness were also beaten, losing by the odd goal in three against Broxburn Athletic. Samuel Jones scored for the visitors just before the break and minutes into the second half Bo’ness were reduced with a red card shown to Dan Irving. Bo’ness equalised through Tom Grant but shortly before the end Matthew McDonald got the winner for Broxburn (Report). Saturday also saw a pre match tribute to Scottish Junior Cup winning Captain Andy Dunlevie where the 1984 squad and Andy’s family were in attendance to join the BU fans in remembering Andy not only as a football player but as a family man.

Always a tough fixture and it’s likely to be the same this time as Bo’ness look to draw level with Lochee in the table whereas the Dundee side want to create daylight between the teams. It’s always a special atmosphere under the lights and the BU Faithful can add to that as they encourage their favourites to get back to winning ways.

Bo’ness United climbed into the top six of the Superleague table, for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, after a dominant display against a very disappointing Lochee United. There was a decent crowd in attendance to watch Bo’ness play their final home match of the season. It was also a historic day for the Newtown Park club as it was the last match to be played on grass before the new artificial surface gets laid in the coming weeks. United manager Steve Kerrigan made two changes from the side that drew with league leaders Bonnyrigg in midweek, on-loan youngsters Ryan Stevenson and Marc Kelly replaced David Gray and Marty Wright, and both were influential in the Bo’ness performance.

Lochee goalkeeper Mark Fotheringham was the hero of his teams run to the semi finals of the Scottish Cup, and he showed his class in the opening stages of the game. He made three important saves to keep the match goalless, firstly denying Marc Kelly and Calum Scott who both had one on one with him, and also a drive from eighteen yards from Kelly. In the ninth minute Ryan Dignan was fortunate to receive only a yellow card from referee Luke after a scything challenge on Gemmell. Fotheringham denied Stevenson as he collected a Jacobs header, and Ross Campbell fired a shot from the resultant corner-kick over the bar from a good position. Lochee could barely get out of their own half, and in the thirty-third minute Bo’ness finally made the breakthrough. Ryan Miller burst through from midfield and was felled by Dignan as he hared into the box. A penalty was awarded, and the ever-reliable Will Snowdon found the corner of the net despite Fotheringham getting a touch on the ball.

Bo’ness introduced Marty Wright at half time, the forward replaced Millar who took a knock when he was brought down for the penalty award. Lochee made one change and it was not a surprise to see the out of sorts Dignan taken off, his place taken by Cameron McMahon. To their credit Lochee started the second half well and managed to get their first efforts on goal. Grant Lawson had two shots blocked after he disposed Snowdon on the right wing and ran in on goal. A good cross from the dangerous Bryan Deasley set up Connor Birse with the goal gaping, unfortunately for Lochee his powerful effort was deflected just wide of Murphy’s post. Nine minutes into the second half Bo’ness scored their second of the afternoon. Devon Jacobs received a Prentice pass on the right wing and his excellent cross was met by Wright who powered home one of his trademark headers past Fotheringham. Three minutes later United scored once more to put the outcome of the game beyond doubt. Ryan Stevenson found Marc Kelly unmarked in the penalty area and the Hamilton Academical loanee fired a super left foot effort into the top left-hand corner of the goal. Bo’ness were rampant now and less than a minute after the restart Fotheringham made another fine save with his legs, this time denying Prentice as he ran onto a Kelly flick. Substitute Fraser Keast, Kelly and Campbell all had good chances saved by Fotheringham as Bo’ness dominated. Two minutes into stoppage time Lochee’s Stephen McNally received his second yellow card of the afternoon after a needless foul and received his marching orders.
Bo’ness have now only tasted defeat once in the last eleven Superleague matches, since the loss away to Forfar West End, and now have ten days off to recover from their glut of recent fixtures before they take on Penicuik next Wednesday.

Bo’ness United narrowly lost out to Broxburn Athletic in what was a tight, competitive contest, the BU cause not helped having to play most of the second half a man short after Dan Irving was sent off.

With the wind at their backs Broxburn made the early running but Bo’ness gradually worked themselves back into the game, a Kieran Mitchell free kick shot going narrowly wide followed by a Murray Binnie effort, Broxburn keeper Kyle King tipping over. Unfortunately for Bo’ness, just before the break they conceded as a Samuel Jones angled shot on the turn found the far corner of the net.

Eight minutes into the second half Bo’ness were reduced to ten men as Dan Irving received a direct red card after a clash on the touchline with a Broxburn player. Despite being a man short Bo’ness set about getting back, a Jack Hodge shot tipped over and a Shaun Brown effort blocked. With fifteen minutes remaining Bo’ness did equalise, a Tom Grant shot from a Jack Hodge corner rebounded back for Grant to head into the opposite corner of the net.

Broxburn were still dangerous with Allan Fleming in the BU goal making a great stop from Jamie Docherty. Seven minutes before the end Broxburn scored what proved to be the winner as Matthew McDonald, only two minutes after coming off the bench, fired home from the corner edge of the box. Before the end a Jackson Mylchreest touch from a Tom Grant cross went narrowly wide and Tom Grant fired over the bar from close in.

This was a disappointing result for Bo’ness whose efforts probably deserved to get something from the game. However, there’s little time to ponder as on Tuesday night another difficult challenge awaits with the visit of Lochee United.
