After their South Challenge Cup tie win at Pumpherston, Bo’ness United resume their quest for Lowland League points as Broxburn Athletic visit Newtown Park on Saturday. Broxburn have made a great start to their league campaign, undefeated to date with sixteen points from a possible eighteen. The only points dropped were at Dunipace but University of Stirling, Gala Fairydean Rovers, Lochee United, Cowdenbeath and Berwick Rangers have all succumbed. The victories were achieved without the loss of a single goal. However, Broxburn will be disappointed at losing out at Linlithgow Rose in the South Challenge Cup last weekend.

Last season Bo’ness went down at home to Broxburn, the BUs putting in what was their poorest display so far. Jordan Armstrong fired Bo’ness into the lead before Jamie Docherty equalised for the visitors. In the second Errol Douglas put Broxburn ahead, Bo’ness unable to respond (Report). By contrast, later in the campaign Bo’ness triumphed at Albyn Park in what was a hard fought contest. Matthew McDonald put the home side ahead before Kieran Mitchell equalised just before the break. In the second half Shaun Brown scored what proved to be the winner, the victory was also credited to a sound the BU defensive display (Report).

While Broxburn were going down at Linlithgow in the South Challenge Cup Bo’ness came back from a single goal deficit at the break to eventually win at Pumpherston in the same competition. Mohamed Sankhour scored for Pumpherston in thirty minutes with the BU half time replacements, Tom Grant, Jackson Mylchreest scoring one each and Kieran Mitchell getting a hat trick on his hundredth appearance for the BUs (Report).

Games against Broxburn are never easy and it is likely to be the same again this weekend. Bo’ness are on a good run at this time while Broxburn are also doing exceptionally well and both teams want to continue in the same vein. The players on both sides will be up for the fray and Bo’ness would be delighted to be the first to take three points from Broxburn.

Hopefully there will be a good turn out from the BU Faithful not only to cheer the players on but prior to the kick off there will be a tribute to Scottish Junior Cup winning captain Andy Dunlevie. Andy died recently and Andy’s family along with many of the 1984 squad will be in attendance.

Bo’ness United served up their worst Lowland League performance of the season, losing out to Broxburn Athletic by the odd goal in three. Broxburn created the best early chances including a Samual Gormley header cleared off the line. However, it was the BUs that struck first, a Jack Hodge corner beyond the far post, cut back for Jordan Armstrong to scoop over Broxburn keeper Robert Watt. Bo’ness went on to enjoy a good spell but were pegged back, the ball being cleared to the edge of the box where Jamie Dochery steered a shot finding the inside of the post.

Twelve minutes into the second half Broxburn took the lead as Errol Douglas got onto the end of a low ball to convert from close in. Following that goal Bo’ness worked hard but huffed and puffed unable to put any pressure on the Broxburn goal. In the end they never really looked like getting back. Banks o’ Dee come calling next week and Bo’ness know only a significant improvement will see them progress in the Scottish Cup.

Bo’ness United celebrated the New Year with an impressive performance at Broxburn Athletic, winning by the odd goal in three to come away with all of the points. Two early blocks in the Bo’ness box signalled the BU determination while creating a couple of chances, Jordan Armstrong heading over and Kieran Mitchell seeing his shot rebuffed by the Broxburn defence. Athletic also had a good opportunity, specifically a Jon Robertson effort that went wide of the target. As it was just short of the half hour Broxburn made the breakthrough, Matthew McDonald getting onto the ball before making room for himself to fire low into the Bo’ness net. The BUs responded with a Billy Mortimer header that just missed the target and a low ball across the box that was only missing the touch to convert. However just before half time the BUs did get the equaliser, Billy Mortimer chesting the ball back into the path of Kieran Michell who blasted home from just inside the Broxburn box.

After the break both sides set about getting ahead, Jon Robertson heading just past the BU post shortly followed by a Tom Grant header going wide of the Broxburn upright. With just under twenty five minutes remaining Bo’ness were in front. Shaun Brown chased down the left to connect with a great Kieran Mitchell pass before he cut inside and curled a low shot that found the opposite corner of the net. The BUs came close again with a Tom Grant free kick shot that was deflected onto the top of the Broxburn bar but Bo’ness then had to work to ensure they held onto their precious lead. BU keeper Allan Fleming dashed out of his goal to clear from the feet of Christopher O’Kane and just before the end he made a great save to stop Jamie Docherty’s goal bound shot.

Another fine BU win and they hope to continue the trend in next week’s new derby clash at home to East Stirlingshire.

Bo’ness United won through to the next round of the South Challenge Cup but had to come back from being a goal down at the break. The BUs enjoyed the majority of possession though the final ball let them down and even when a chance presented were unable to convert. Pumpherston though did present problems, the BU back line finding the home side forwards tricky to handle. Almost on the half hour mark Pumpherston went ahead when the Bo’ness defence hesitated in dealing with a long ball from keeper Cody Thomson allowing Mohamed Sankhour to slip in to slot past Sam Gardner in the Bo’ness goal.

Bo’ness made three changes for the second half Tom Grant, Jackson Mylchreest and Kieran Mitchell entering the fray. Significant changes as it turned out, Tom Grant firing in seven minutes into the half and only three minutes later Jackson Mylcreest scoring his first for the BUs. Kieran Michell was making his hundredth appearance for the BUs and he celebrated with a hat trick, his third coming from an Under 20s Ben Murdoch’s assist. Another 20s player Kyle Coulter also enjoyed a run out for the final twenty minutes

In the end it proved a comfortable win for Bo’ness though there were a few concerns among the BU Faithful at half time wondering if it was going to be a bad day at Pumphy.
