Match Preview 2026 2027
Brechin City
Lowland League
Newtown Park
Saturday 17 October 2026

Bo’ness United welcome Lowland League newcomers Brechin City to Newtown Park a first ever match against the Angus side. It was in the early thirties Bo’ness United’s predecessors Bo’ness FC played Brechin City in the then Scottish League Second Division the teams winning their home fixtures.

Brechin City dropped down from the SPFL to the Highland League where they were very competitive but unable to find a way to make their return. They are hoping for better luck in the Lowland League and are currently sitting in fourth place, four points behind leaders Tranent but with a game in hand. Brechin have only experienced one defeat in the league that was a few weeks ago at home to Hill of Beath. They also drew at East Stirlingshire in the first week but have notched up impressive wins at Lochee United and Bonnyrigg Rose. In the Scottish Cup Brechin won through on penalties at home to Buckie Thistle and meet Strathspey Thistle in the next round. However, they went down at the first hurdle in the South Challenge Cup losing at home to Pollok.

Bo’ness have enjoyed two successful cup ties with their extra time Scottish Cup win against Irvine Meadow XI and on Saturday had a good South Challenge Cup tie victory at Crossgates Primrose. Robbie Murdoch gave the BUs an early lead and second half goals from Murray Binnie, Kyle Coulter and Hamza Nimaga sealed the win (Report).

Bo’ness are in the bottom half of the table losing heavily at Linlithgow Rose in their last League game. They are keen to improve on that showing and the comeback win against Meadow shows what they are capable of. The players once again need to be at their best if they want to achieve a result and as usual the BU Faithful can do their bit to get behind the team.

BO’NESS UNITED MATCH SUMMARY SEASON 2026/2027

Date – Saturday 10 October 2026

Competition – South Challenge Cup Round 3

Crossgates Primrose 0

Bo’ness United 4
(Murdoch 2, Binnie 51p, Coulter 77, Nimaga 79)

Bo’ness United eased into the next round of the South Challenge Cup thanks mainly to an impressive second half performance building on an early strike in the first half. It was only two minutes in, Robbie Murdich cutting across from the right before curling a low shot into the far corner of the net. The BUs created chances to extend their lead though it was not all one way, Crossgates keeping the Bo’ness defence occupied. Their best opportunity came just before the break, Luke Mahady seeing his goal bound shot blocked away.

Four minutes into the second half Bo’ness scored a second, this time from the spot after Hamza Nimaga was fouled in the box, Murray Binnie converting. That stung Crossgates into action as they looked to get back and the game stepped up a gear play moving from end to end. As it turned out Bo’ness proved more effective putting pressure on the Crossgates goal. In the final fifteen minutes Bo’ness sealed the tie with two quick goals U20 Kyle Coulter coming on, his first touch strolling a Shaun Brown cutback past Primrose keeper Logan Halliday. Hamza Nimaga completed the scoring and Crossgates misery was complete when just before the end Callum Deas was sent off after receiving a second yellow card of the game. Bo’ness now look forward to difficult games ahead before the next stage of this tournament.
