Lex Shields

Jennifer Snedden has been busy interviewing Bo'ness legends over the last few weeks, this is her chat with the one amd only Lex Shields. Enjoy!

Lex Shields..... one of your nominated wide midfielders who made the fan voted XI Bo’ness United team.

Q. As a young player, who were the teams/players that influenced you growing up?

Best teams were Hibs and Celtic 1967 teams fantastic to watch.

Jimmy Johnson, Johan Cruyff Jim Baxter, Lou Macari were the players I liked to watch.

Q. Who was the hardest player that you ever came up against?

Hardest.... Lennie Frew, he would kick his own granny.

Q. In a recent interview we had with John Robertson, he said that Lenny Reid was a brilliant manager however must have been tough being player / manager, you played under Lenny Reid, what’s your thoughts on Lenny Reid?

Lenny was the best coach I played under, his training influenced me. I enjoyed it (except they daft runs around linlithgow) at pre-season.

Q. Personal question from me, you played under Alex Totten at Alloa right? Knowing Alex Totten from my time working at Falkirk FC straight after school, I thought he was a tough but firm manager with a wicked sense of humour, what’s your thoughts on Alex Totten?

Tots was a fair and honest man who loved talking about his time at Liverpool with Shankly and I loved listening to it he was a great and humble person.

Q. Talking previously to you and seeing you in company with Frank Wilson (Doodles) I believe there was some nonsense going on between you! What is your funny story / highlight of your time at the Club?

Got so many highlights and funny stories, played with some great players and characters at Bo’ness..these were the best playing days of my life, as for the funny stories...that would be telling..wouldn't it ? Far too many to pick any (he got told he was a spoilsport here!)

Q. Now we can’t ask you questions without referencing “that goal” you scored against Baillieston at Ibrox in 1984, it still does the rounds on social media! What’s your memory of the goal, the build-up, scoring etc?

Tam Breen passes to me for once ha ha then I go on a mazy run and ended up with the goalie to beat and slotted ball past him with the outside of my boot..the rest is history..was the best feeling ever.

Q. Now, you played in front of some big crowds, that game being a prime example what was it like playing and scoring in front of crowds like that?

I always thrived on it, the big following Bo’ness carried home or away was a pleasure to play on front of. They spurred us on no end, especially Scottish Cup ties at Newtown with the pipe band, it was that exciting I sometimes wished I was in the crowd, great times.

Q. Do you have any regrets from your time as a player?

My regrets were that I didn't get to finish my playing days with Boness. Enough said.

Q. You may have seen the revamp at Newtown Park and now playing in the Lowland League, what do you make of these developments?

Only seen pics off the new set up looks pretty impressive, a bit sad though that the "hallowed turf "has gone, great to have loads of kids, coaching stuff for the community though and a team in the Lowland League as they can move up through the ranks hopefully to the scottish league.

Q. Lastly, what would be your top 11 Bo’ness United squad?

Best 11....Bo’ness Utd 1984 football squad, great bunch of talent and played footy how it should be played.

Thank you Lex.

And for extra pleasure here is that goal just to show it again, just for!! (Hope it works, me and technology!)
