An improvement from December with four out of our five games played.
Bo'ness trip to the Falkirk Stadium for our new year derby against East Stirlingshire was called off for medical reasons.
First footers to Newtown Park were Cumbernauld Colts and the BU's were seeking a response from the away defeat suffered in the reverse fixture. In a mirror image of the clash of the sides at Newtown last season Bo'ness raced into a two goal lead only to concede in the second half to set up a nervy finish. Bo'ness dominated the first half and took the lead via a Matty Flynn header to complete a slick attacking move. A well worked setpiece finished off by Jamie McCormack doubled their advantage before the break. Colts grabbed a goal back in the second half which sparked a fightback but United held on for the points. POTM: Jamie McCormack.
United next played against the University of Stirling at Forthbank. A frenetic, end to end first half, with multiple chances created for both sides. Calum Rae and Danny Galbraith had tame efforts from great shooting positions within forty seconds of the game starting. The students took the lead in the 11th minute after good play from Jamie Penker on the right, his through ball found Jason Jarvis who found the corner of the net past the trialist keeper. Bo'ness got to grips with the game however and levelled in the 35th minute, the impressive Ryan Stevenson racing onto a pass to slot past the home keeper from the edge of the box. Stevenson and Kyle Johnston both had shooting opportunities in first half stoppage time that frustratingly never hit the target. Both teams huffed and puffed in the second half but neither keeper was really tested. POTM: Ryan Stevenson.
A trip to Sauchie in the EOS Qualifying Cup followed and a very entertaining game which went all the way the penalty kicks! Bo'ness edged the first half and were ahead at the break thanks to a Jamie McCormack strike. The second half was lit up with a marvellous 30 plus yard goal from Keir Macauley who lobbed the keeper after a sliced clearance. Chances followed to extend the lead but Sauchie grabbed a goal back then levelled with 15 minutes remaining. Devon Jacobs saw red in extra time for his second yellow but United held on to take the match to a penalty shoutout which they won 4-3. A home tie vs Musselburgh in the next round awaits.
POTM: Jamie McCormack.
The final match of the month was a disappointing draw at home to Edinburgh University. A wind affected match finished goalless and the best chances of the match probably fell to the visitors late on.
United Club POTM: Danny Galbraith.
