Interview

We grabbed a word with Allan McGonigal at yesterday's match, after the legendary manager made a return to the dugout for the testimonial game. Firstly, on Mikey himself.

"He was a player you didn't like coming up against but you would always love to have in your team. He played at 100 mph, covering a lot of ground. His discipline, organisation, professionalism, in fact everything about him stood out. He's still fit and it's a credit to him that he's still playing in his late 30's. He has been a great ambassador for the football club."

It was pointed out that the dressing room had many characters and we asked how it was managing such a spirited bunch.

"To be honest, when you are winning games it is easy to handle them. They've all got egos and opinions but over the piece they managed themselves by setting their own standards which were very high. Amongst that there were certainly many laughs as well, a really good group."

We also asked how Allan was enjoying retirement from work and football after a long career.

"It's very good. I've got a lot of time on my hands now. I was in football for a very long time, 44 years from start to finish so I was perhaps a little burnt out when I stopped. It's always lovely to come back here as I have great memories and affection for the club, supporters and committee. To be fair to the committee they're one of the few clubs that won together and lost together. Other places you won together but lost yourself, so that's as high a complement as I can give."

Lastly, he had a word for the Boness United -United Club members.

"Credit also to the United Club, who funded the transfer from Hill of Beath. What a fantastic enterprise it is and their members deserve a lot of credit for what they bring to Bo’ness United."

Thanks to Allan for his time.
